Waterstops are static seals installed between joints of a concrete structures in order to avoid the passage of water or other fluids. The waterstop is a part of the concrete or across and/or over the joint. To be able to select the best waterstop to the application there are many points to consider. Concrete waterstops rose to prominence as concrete use became the standard choice in commercial and residential construction inside the mid-20th century. After concrete bridges started dotting the map in the early 1900s along with the Hoover and Grand Coulee dams were constructed from concrete in the 1930s, it took hold because most used material in new construction. PVC was the predominant option for waterstops through the 1940s and continued for several years and is also still the commonest waterstop material.
